Train sounds and tender melodies shine on ‘Our Detour’ by Shabason, Krgovich, and Tenniscoats
Shabason, Krgovich, and Tenniscoats have unveiled ‘Our Detour,’ a delicate, impressionistic track that serves as the first glimpse of their upcoming collaborative album Wao, due August 29 via Western Vinyl.
The single was born from a rare creative encounter that took place in April 2024, when Joseph Shabason and Nicholas Krgovich embarked on a two-week tour of Japan and teamed up with Saya and Ueno of the beloved Japanese duo Tenniscoats. Though they only had two rehearsals, the connection between the musicians was immediate, with their chemistry coming alive on stage and soon, in the studio.
Recorded entirely over two days with no pre-written material, ‘Our Detour’ captures the gentle spontaneity of the project. Blending Tenniscoats’ dreamlike aesthetic with Shabason and Krgovich’s textured melodic instincts, the track unfolds slowly and meditatively. It offers a glimpse into a musical exchange steeped in lyrical curiosity and observational wonder, reflecting on everything from nicknames for clouds to everyday encounters in clothing stores.
“What is also cool about the album is that the house is very much not a recording studio so it sounds super live and because it’s also right on the train tracks you can often hear the train in the recordings as it drives by. To me it adds so much charm and personality,” Joseph describes. “The whole thing felt like a dream and was over so quickly so I kinda forgot about it until a few weeks after I got home. When I opened up the sessions is was really clear that we had done something special.”
With Wao arriving August 29, ‘Our Detour’ sets the tone for an album that promises to be rich in texture, subtlety, and a shared sense of creative joy.
