Open Head shares dark and experimental new single ‘House’

Open Head, the Kingston-based experimental quartet, has returned with their latest single, ‘House,’ a brooding and atmospheric track from their upcoming LP What Is Success, set to be released on January 24th, 2025, via Wharf Cat Records.
Emerging from a pivotal jam session, ‘House’ breaks away from their earlier, busier post-punk stylings and ventures into a space where tonal landscapes take precedence over intricate melodies. The band blends an unconventional mix of sounds, from manipulated basslines created on an Arturia Brute SE to haunting pads generated by a guitar prepared with screwdriver bits.
The eerie, mechanical imagery in the song’s lyrics enhances its unsettling mood as well. Open Head describes ‘House’ as imagining “a machine made of flesh and metal limbs, trekking along in some sort of destructive tortured state.” The refrain, “I don’t wanna know what habit forms chains / I just wanna be done for awhile,” further underscores the track’s dystopian themes.
With What Is Success on the horizon, ‘House’ offers a captivating preview of Open Head’s ability to merge avant-garde textures with raw emotion.
