Just weeks after the evocative ‘Capelli Argento,’ Italian artist MERLI ARMISA returns with a new double release, ‘KOTO,’ and ‘Al cader della giornata,’ out now via Dischi Sotterranei.

The two-track offering marks another chapter leading to his highly anticipated sophomore album. Following the ethereal footsteps of his 2021 debut Lleb, MERLI ARMISA (aka Michele Boscacci) deepens his blend of shoegaze, dream pop, and lo-fi, while venturing into fresh sonic terrain inspired by East Asian aesthetics and experimental acts like Parannoul, Asian Glow, and Mid-Air Thief.

Lead track ‘KOTO’ is rooted in Yasunari Kawabata’s novel of the same name and pays homage to the traditional Japanese instrument. The song emerged in the wake of a serious injury and reflects a meditative, cathartic energy. Swirling pitch-shifted harmonies, hypnotic vocals, and Giacomo Ferrari’s propulsive drumming conjure a sense of suspended time and emotional clarity.

“I had read ‘Koto’ because it had been given to me as a gift, and its tenderness and simplicity were what I wanted to inspire me to create something equally intense and calm during a time when I felt drained and uncreative. I also thought it could be a nice idea to play the melody on a Koto. We went around it so much that in the end, Koto refused to shape itself according to my will and transformed on its own, revealing itself as both a memory and a hope.”

Complementing the atmospheric journey of ‘KOTO’ is the gentle ballad ‘Al cader della giornata.’ Carried by acoustic guitar and whispered vocals, the song glows with emotional intimacy and romantic longing. It closes with the haunting refrain: “How many stars, how many stars. You tell me which one is mine. I do not yearn for the most beautiful, as long as it is near you.”

As we await the full album, ‘KOTO’ and ‘Al cader della giornata’ offer a glimpse into a rich world of soundscapes and sentiment, where each note feels like a brushstroke across memory and emotion.
