Brighton-based artist Jopy has released her new single ‘Head Hunters Pub and Grub’ today via Goo Records. This imaginative and eclectic track is her first release on the label known for early releases from artists like Welly and Canned Pineapple.

‘Head Hunters Pub and Grub’ was inspired by an unusual request from a friend to write a song about cannibals who run a pub, eat their customers, and gain superpowers from doing so. The result is a unique blend of glam, new wave, and B-Movie horror fantasy, drawing comparisons to the Rocky Horror Picture Show, the B-52s, and Marc Bolan. Jopy, a trans woman who grew up in Guildford and now resides in Brighton, uses her music to explore themes of outsider identity and subversive pleasure.

The track opens with energetic surf guitars and Marc Bolan-esque vocals, creating a vibrant and whimsical sound. Jopy played every instrument on the track, and she also produced and mixed it herself. She explains the deeper meaning behind the song:

“Head Hunters…’ is about a group of people whose life choices are so far out of the ordinary and yet they have built their own space with its own customs and culture. A big inspiration was The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Some people watch it and think “wow what a fun, wacky film”. However, I think if you’ve ever been rejected by mainstream society and found community in people who’ve been through the same, then The Rocky Horror Picture Show becomes so much more. I hope ‘Head Hunters’ is able to tap into a similar feeling and give weirdos like me an escape and put a smile on our faces, even if only for a few minutes.”

‘Head Hunters Pub and Grub’ is out now. Jopy’s full EP is set to be released this September.
