Isolated Youth unveils haunting single ‘Love Locked in a Dark Room’ ahead of debut album

Swedish post-punk quartet Isolated Youth returns with ‘Love Locked in a Dark Room,’ the lead single from their highly anticipated debut album miserere mei, due out April 4th via Birthday Productions and Memorials Of Distinction.
‘Love Locked in a Dark Room’ lays the foundation for miserere mei, both sonically and thematically. As the first song written for the album, the track caught co-producer Faris Badwan’s attention during a live-streamed performance at the Norrtälje Art Center. Built around William Mårdbarg’s blues-inspired guitar strumming, the song weaves a nocturnal soundscape, complemented by Axel Mårdbarg’s icy and emotive falsetto. The combination of blues-driven patterns and a hauntingly melodic chorus creates a dynamic, gothic atmosphere that feels both intimate and expansive.
Lyrically, the song draws inspiration from Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer, exploring themes of isolation and longing. Guitarist William Mårdbarg explains:
“Being out on a ‘cold, dark, violent night’ and, to some extent, feeling trapped in nightly environments without an escape plan. Or perhaps like being underwater and looking up to the surface, finding someone else in this setting, and suddenly realising later the same night that there’s something bright and pure that cuts through the noise and brings you back above the surface. Then, everything else that happened feels like a nightmarish, strange dream, and in that moment, realising that you don’t want the other person to leave… Like love locked in a dark room.”
Out now, ‘Love Locked in a Dark Room,’ delivers a brooding anthem.
