Horsepower shares raw and energized new single ‘Coins’ ahead of debut EP

With her self-titled debut EP arriving this Friday, June 27, New York-based songwriter Charlotte Weinman—known under the moniker Horsepower—has unveiled its final preview: the emotionally charged single ‘Coins.’
‘Coins’ stands out as a pivotal moment on Horsepower, both sonically and emotionally. Written on the night Weinman and her longtime partner decided to part ways, the song originally poured out as a flood of raw, unfiltered emotion. While much of that initial version was pared down over time, its central chorus remains—a relic of heartbreak reinterpreted through the lens of anger and growth. Carried by Weinman’s commanding vocals and a richly textured arrangement shaped by her brothers Noah and Ben Weinman, the track brims with both vulnerability and venom, capturing the transformation of sadness into something sharper and more assertive.
Charlotte says of the track:
“This is the first song I wrote for the EP. I started writing it the night my partner of many years and I decided to break up. The version I wrote that night was like a million verses longer and the lyrics were completely raw and pathetic, which I say with love. They were open wounds. The only lyrics that remain from that first pass is the chorus. As I’ve gotten distance from the situation that begot the song, a lot of my sadness has been energized, and I’ve been more interested in exploring the anger. So we fanged this song, too. It’s been fun watching people connect to it when we play it live.”
Horsepower will celebrate the release of the EP with a live show at Union Pool in New York City on June 28. With ‘Coins’ setting the tone, Weinman’s debut EP promises a nuanced, emotionally rich entry into the indie rock landscape, drawing from a range of influences including Hole, Sleater Kinney, and Lomelda while carving out a voice that’s wholly her own.
