Frog Eyes delves into tangible art and digital reflection with ‘I See the Same Things’

Frog Eyes, the cult-favorite Vancouver-based rock band, has released ‘I See the Same Things,’ a standout single from their forthcoming album The Open Up, due March 7, 2025, via Paper Bag Records.
‘I See the Same Things’ combines Frog Eyes’ signature blend of emotional intensity and lyrical depth with a sonic palette that bridges genres. The track is steeped in themes of resisting the smoothing effects of digital convenience and cherishing physical spaces that foster artistic creation, such as Vancouver’s Luxe Hall in the Western Front. The warm tones of the song evoke a sense of nostalgia while addressing the contemporary struggle to maintain authenticity in a digitized world.
Reflecting on the video’s concept, frontman Carey Mercer explains:
“The concept for the video is to show Shyla, our keyboard player, digitizing and archiving performance-art pieces that mostly took place on the top floor in the Luxe Hall. The video then shows us playing in the Luxe Hall. It’s a conversation, as all art is, with the art of the city that you live in. We are all just doing the same things, day in, day out, it’s how the art gets made, I think.”
Director Derek Janzen, collaborating with the band for the sixth time, highlights the significance of incorporating the Luxe Hall and its art history into the visual narrative. spaces like the Western Front feel so precious as a tangible place for art to exist and continue to be created. And if I’ve done my job right, the act of viewing the archiving of these works and maintaining this history end up acting as a form of art in themselves,” he shares.
As Frog Eyes continues their artistic journey with The Open Up, ‘I See the Same Things’ serves as a poignant and layered exploration of modern life, showcasing the band’s ability to bridge the past and present through their unique lens. The single and video are available to stream now, offering fans a compelling preview of the band’s highly anticipated tenth album.
