Dead Tooth lashes out with dance-punk fury on ‘You Never Do Shit’

New York City’s rodeo-core provocateurs Dead Tooth have dropped ‘You Never Do Shit,’ the raucous first single from their upcoming self-titled debut album, due July 18 via Trash Casual.
Told from the point of view of a struggling musician turning to a life of crime, ‘You Never Do Shit’ serves up a menacing dose of dark disco and post-punk energy. Complete with a satirical boy band-style dance video—directed by frontman Zach Ellis and choreographed by Nola Sporn Smith—the track highlights Ellis’s gift for crafting theatrical, over-the-top characters that channel both chaos and catharsis. Blistering saxophone, jagged guitars, and a raspy vocal performance recorded on a vintage broadcast mic give the song a raw urgency that feels both lived-in and unhinged.
Ellis notes:
“Originally this song was a demo for a fictional TV band called ‘Ex Post Facto.’ Our publishing company had put out a call for a couple songs to be written for the TV band in an Apple TV show called City on Fire that was based in NYC’s early 2000’s music scene… Of the two demos I submitted they ended up going with the other one, aptly titled ‘City on Fire,’… but I got to keep this one and turn it into a Dead Tooth song. It was a win-win!”
‘You Never Do Shit’ is just a taste of what’s to come on Dead Tooth, an album that promises cinematic drama, existential anxiety, and ragged euphoria—delivered through a mix of no-frills production and full-throttle performance. The band will hit the road for a Northeast tour beginning May 12 in Washington, DC, with stops in Pittsburgh, Toronto, Burlington, and more before wrapping up May 23 in Queens, NY.
