NYC-based indie rockers Closebye have just released the video for their latest single ‘Lucky Number,’ the opening track from their forthcoming album Hammer of My Own, set to drop this Friday, August 23, 2024.

Out now, ‘Lucky Number’ showcases the band’s signature gauzy indie rock sound, with contributions from all members, including notable input from Margaux Bouchegnies of Margaux. The song, inspired by a story about lottery winners whose lives were ruined by their newfound wealth, delves into themes of destruction and self-blame. Songwriter Jonah Paul Smith reflects on these themes as they relate to a personal loss, capturing the emotional complexity of shifting between feelings of resentment and self-reproach.

“The first inspiration for ‘Lucky Number’ came from some article I read about lottery winners who had destroyed their own lives after winning the prize. The idea of a lucky number ultimately leading to someone’s downfall was sad and funny to me. I was thinking about luck and destruction, and at the time, I was mourning the loss of a friendship. The song became about all of those things. One day you feel resentful and betrayed, and another day you feel ashamed of your own stake in the mess. The song follows that shift of blame, as the chorus lyric turns from ‘take a look at what you destroyed’ to ‘take a look at what I destroyed’ later in the song.”

As the opening track of Hammer of My Own, ‘Lucky Number’ sets the stage for an album deeply rooted in themes of rebuilding and self-discovery. The album, crafted with the help of multi-instrumentalist Ian Salazar and mixed by James Krausse, promises to deliver a sound that’s both textured and powerful, a step forward from the band’s 2022 debut Lucid News.
