Brooklyn-based indie project bug crush has shared a new single, ‘Tugboat,’ a slow-burning reflection on desire, ambition, and the cycles we find ourselves in.

The track, which arrives ahead of bug crush’s forthcoming EP Somehow I Go In Circles All The Time (out May 16), pairs hazy slowcore textures with Carolyn Fahrner’s introspective lyricism. Fahrner, the heart of the project, delivers a subdued yet emotionally charged performance that lingers long after the final note. ‘Tugboat’ captures the feeling of pushing forward without fully understanding what you’re chasing, much like the vessel it’s named after—quiet, small, but always moving.

bug crush’s Carolyn Fahrner says:

“I wrote this song at the beginning of 2024 about being in a state of desire, but also feeling unsure about why I wanted the things I wanted. I was thinking a lot about New Year’s Resolutions and the goals I set for myself and this song emerged as a reflection of that. I frequently get comments about the amount I cram into my schedule and I’ve always struggled with creating reasonable schedules for myself. I liked the idea of being a tugboat to reflect my tendency to just keep pushing on. It’s a small song that was really elevated with the support of Oli Deakin and Justin Gibble.”

‘Tugboat’ follows the release of the EP’s first single, ‘Mikey Told Me,’ and continues to showcase Fahrner’s ability to turn intimate bedroom reflections into songs that feel both deeply personal and widely relatable. Somehow I Go In Circles All The Time is set to explore themes of coming of age, transition, and the emotional loops we often find ourselves stuck in.
