Baths return with unbridled honesty in ‘Sea of Men’ / Announces first new album in seven years
After a seven-year hiatus, Baths, the LA-based artist and producer Will Wiesenfeld, is back with a new album titled Gut, set for release on February 21, 2025. Leading the charge is its first single, ‘Sea of Men,’ an electrifying reentry into Baths’ distinct sonic and lyrical universe.
‘Sea of Men’ sets the tone for Gut with a blend of eerie yet jovial guitars that evoke the sound of harpsichords, underpinning Wiesenfeld’s blunt and darkly humorous reflections on sex and vulnerability. The track balances bravado and raw emotion, with Wiesenfeld candidly exploring the complexity of his instincts and identity.
Wiesenfeld explains:
“I find myself thinking about how confusingly animal I often feel—present in body but dissociative in spirit. Instinctual.”
With live drums by Casey Dietz and Sam KS, ‘Sea of Men’ marks the most collaborative effort on drums in Baths’ history, adding a dynamic layer to Wiesenfeld’s self-produced work. His songwriting process—starting from visceral, unfiltered emotions and refining them over time—results in a track that feels immediate and deeply considered.
As Wiesenfeld puts it:
“Gut is essentially me trying to make my feelings make sense by not initially psychoanalyzing them—by instead just having feelings said and put on the table.”
‘Sea of Men’ is an audacious start to this new era for Baths, combining unvarnished honesty with meticulous production. The single is available now on all major streaming platforms.
