Arny Margret reflects on dark beginnings with ‘Happy New Year’
Icelandic singer/songwriter Arny Margret has released ‘Happy New Year,’ the closer to her upcoming sophomore album, I Miss You, I Do, set for release on March 7, 2025, via One Little Independent Records.
Recorded with co-producer Andrew Berlin at Gregory Alan Isakov’s studio in Boulder, Colorado, ‘Happy New Year’ captures the melancholic undertones of the season it depicts. The song grapples with the end-of-year introspection, blending Margret’s vocals and delicate instrumentation into a reflective meditation on transition and loss. Despite its shimmering soundscape, the track remains rooted in the bittersweet emotions of New Year’s Eve—a time Margret describes as “a sad and dark time.”
Margret explains:
“This one is about Christmas and New Year. New Year’s Eve has never been the best time of year for me, I’ve always felt like it’s a sad and dark time…there’s probably a lot of people out there that can connect to that.”
‘Happy New Year’ is out now.
