Alice Phoebe Lou confronts the past with poise on ‘Old Shadows’

Alice Phoebe Lou returns with ‘Old Shadows,’ a tender piano ballad released as her third single of the year. With a delicate yet assertive tone, the track offers a raw glimpse into the artist’s younger self, revealing vulnerability and strength through cinematic simplicity.
Drawn from a deeply personal archive, ‘Old Shadows’ continues Lou’s unveiling of previously unreleased material that spans her last decade of songwriting. The song’s arrangement is minimal but emotionally rich—anchored by a quiet piano progression that frames her airy, expressive vocals. The intimacy of the recording evokes a parlor-room serenade, placing the listener in the calm center of Lou’s inner world. ‘Old Shadows’ follows the release of ‘You and I‘ and ‘The Surface,’ both marking her first ventures into self-production.
Lou recollects:
“I dug this one out of the vault of songs I wrote in my twenties that felt too personal and sincere to see the light of day. When I took it out of its hiding place and played around with it, I felt such a deep sense of love and care for my younger self and all she was going through when she wrote this song. It’s the age-old tale of struggling to receive real love after so much hurt and confusion. Recognizing the shadows of past painful loves that haunt you and admitting to yourself how hard it is to get used to being loved and accepted and treated well. It’s been beautiful to come back to this song and relive the moment that I understood my worth and accepted someone’s love and care.”
With ‘Old Shadows,’ Alice Phoebe Lou continues to craft songs that feel like personal letters—honest, tender, and timeless.
