Track By Track: Yellow Belly discusses her debut album, Ghostwriter
Ghostwriter, the debut album from Yellow Belly, invites listeners into an evocative world where melancholic melodies intertwine with hypnotic, downtempo electronic beats. Co-produced by producer Rob Bryant (Unknown Land, Bare Island), whose contribution was essential to its creation, each track is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, reflecting Dominique Finnegan’s compelling voice and artistic precision. The album promises to be a profound listening experience, resonating with those who appreciate deep, atmospheric music.
Follow along as Yellow Belly discusses each track from Ghostwriter.
“Creating Ghostwriter has been a deeply personal journey for me. Each track is a reflection of my experiences and emotions, crafted with the intent to connect with listeners on a profound level. Written between 2022 and 2023, my evolving perspective makes it seem as if a different self wrote these songs—hence, Ghostwriter. The term ‘ghostwriter’ typically implies anonymity, but here it signifies a past self, now distant. I am excited to share this piece of my soul with the world and hope it resonates with those who find solace in the music.”
— Dominique Finnegan (Yellow Belly)
1. ‘Stopping Time to Take a Frame’
‘Stopping Time to Take a Frame’ is a magical prelude setting the tone for the album traversing the stillness of those small intricate moments.
2. ‘Signal’
Atmospheric synth-lead melodies layered with ethereal vocals about a lack of communication and misunderstandings within a relationship.
3. ‘Holding the Space’
A melancholic journey through introspective lyrics and downtempo beats. This song questions whether or not something is working, navigating between the positives and the negatives.
4. ‘Luna Sea’
‘Luna Sea’ is about the realisation of an inevitable end. A blend of lush vocal harmonies and electronic rhythms.
5. ‘Focus Inward’
‘Focus Inward’ is the most reflective piece of the album. It explores the sorrow of loneliness but understanding that all we have is ourself and the importance in learning to trust that. It is a letter to myself to focus on myself and my needs.
6. ‘Crux’
An evocative track exploring themes of loss and longing. ‘Crux’ deals with the aftermath of a damaging revelation: “You hold me, but you don’t hold me together.”
7. ‘Golden Hour’
‘Golden Hour’ is a song of manifestation. During the writing of Ghostwriter, I was feeling a numbness and I longed to find something to give me feeling and meaning again. This song is an imagining of the most beautiful, delicate, compelling, euphoria I could dream up, after a period of darkness.
8. ‘Define’
Concluding the album with a serene, atmospheric, climactic, finish, ‘Define’ expresses the pureness of love; fully accepting and fully accepted.
