Track By Track: Maver walks us through his latest EP, Spirals

Released on October 23rd, Maver’s Spirals EP is a deeply personal exploration of mental health, reflecting on his experiences with anxiety and depression. Written during late-night sessions in his bedroom, the EP features collaborations with artists like jnr. and LORA, and maintains an organic, raw sound. With tracks like ‘Damn Sad’ and ‘Short Term Memory,’ Maver’s aim is to offer listeners comfort, reminding them that it’s okay to be sad and that they’re not alone.
Read along as Maver takes us through each track of his latest EP Spirals.
1. ‘Short Term Memory’
‘Short Term Memory’ came from a tough time when I felt stuck, despite doing everything I could to feel better—exercising, getting outside, all the things that are supposed to help. It’s about realising that sometimes, instead of overthinking why you’re sad, you just need to distract yourself and keep going. Everyone’s dealing with their own stuff, and this song is about accepting that and trusting that things will get better. Tim (Ukiyo) and I spent hours workshopping it in the lounge room, and it ended up being one of the last tracks added to the EP, right before the deadline.
2. ‘Damn Sad’
‘Damn Sad’ is a more personal track for me. It’sabout rejecting help when you need it most, something I’ve experienced and something I’ve seen in the people I care about. The song is a reminder to use the tools you’ve got for improving your mental health, even when it feels like you can’t. It’s meant to be a song you can cry to but also dance to in your room—a mix of catharsis and release.
3. ‘I’m Healing’ (with LORA)
‘I’m Healing’ (with LORA) dives into the idea of wearing a mask to hide how you’re really feeling, just to fit in or avoid bringing others down. It’s about those moments when you don’t even recognize yourself because you’re trying so hard to be someone else. The second half of the track takes you into this new world of sound, where voices grow and build, symbolizing the emotional release that comes with healing.
4. ‘Lazy’ (with jnr.)
‘Lazy’ (with jnr.) was inspired by a time of burnout. I was feeling so overworked, and I just wanted to stop and embrace doing nothing. This track is about celebrating those lazy moments instead of feeling guilty about them. The synth solo we put in gives it this perfect laid-back vibe, like the soundtrack to a lazy afternoon.
5. ‘Lay Down’
‘Lay Down’ is all about that daily struggle with anxiety—the feeling of being pulled down by your bed and stuck there. It’s a conversation I have with my bed almost every day, and the bridge in the song represents finally breaking free from that spiral, even if only for a little while.
