Read along as Jonas tells the stories behind each track from his EP, Acceleration.
“Acceleration is my new mini album with 6 very melodic songs. A mix between sweet groovy vocal songs and peak-time club music. The album title is inspired by the frenetic pace of the digital age. I feel that it is more important than ever to create moments of escape from the constant stream of information. For me, these moments happen mostly when I am sitting in my studio or making music on the road. It was important for me was to write all the songs without looking too much left or right and just enjoyed the process of creation to the fullest.”
— Jonas Saalbach
1. ‘Acceleration’
‘Acceleration’ is a homage to our digital age. A song with a lot of energy and a good mood. A positive look into the future at a time when everything around us feels like a seemingly endless acceleration.
2. ‘Pretending’
What I like about that track is that it has a lot of elements, but they don’t always happen at the same time. For example, when the acid sound comes in, the lead sound is not playing. It’s a well-organised and melodic vocal track with a good dose of pop. I think this is my personal favourite from the mini album.
3. ‘Exo’ (ft. RVLF)
In the lyrics of ‘Exo,’ the character takes on a non-human role and wonders what it feels like to be human, what it’s like to breathe air and what it’s like to see through human eyes. The influence of technology is a really interesting and topical subject. We already recorded the vocals in 2021, but only now I came up with a good instrumental for it.
4. ‘Sense Of Momentum’
I like the arrangement of this track and that it has very soft and emotional parts as well as strong peak time moments. In my live set, I set up a 2-or 3-minute loop and play a hypnotic, constantly changing arpeggiator on my synth. What’s really exciting is that the song wouldn’t make any sense that way, but in the club and in the flow of my set it fits really well and changes the story.
5. ‘Radical Acceptance’
This track’s mixture of dreamy pads and clear beats and grooves. I usually start my DJ sets rather deep and end up with warmer tracks. I tend to play ‘Radical Acceptance’ with its positive energy at the end.
6. ‘Running’
I wrote ‘Running’ over a period of several months and really took my time. I think it’s more of a song to listen to than a “club banger.” What I particularly like is the moment when both singers alternate in the break. That makes the song really special. By the way, these are my own recorded vocals and not samples.
