Rooted in Appalachian folk traditions but shaped by years of modern experimentation, ‘Set It Off’ sees John-Robert confronting his social anxiety with uplifting energy. Written as an imagined moment of overcoming hesitation, the track pairs his heartfelt lyricism with a playful rhythm, offering a glimpse of the broader themes woven throughout Cross Stitch.
John-Robert explains:
“Post-breakup, I wanted to prove to myself that I was still fun. I went out by myself, dressed in something cute, but couldn’t build the courage to dance or talk to anyone. I wrote the tune as if I had overcome my social anxiety.”
