3 New Albums Out This Week You Should Listen to Now: Sophie May, Bill Callahan, and Rakim
There’s so much good music out in the ether that sometimes it’s difficult to parse through all of it. Every week The Daily Music Report will do the hard work for you and highlight the best releases available on streaming services.
This week we’re highlighting new music from Sophie May, Bill Callahan, and Rakim.
Sophie May – Deep Sea Creatures EP
Sophie May’s new EP, Deep Sea Creatures, released on July 26, is a deeply personal exploration of her struggles with OCD and intrusive thoughts. The project was inspired in part by a lyric from Father John Misty’s song ‘When You’re Smiling and Astride Me,’ which resonated with May during a difficult period of isolation. The EP includes the viral track ‘Tiny Dictator,’ which candidly addresses her experiences with anxiety and has provided a sense of solidarity for listeners facing similar challenges. May’s songwriting journey, intensified by the pandemic and her subsequent rise on TikTok, has led to a sound that authentically captures her essence, combining folk simplicity with a nuanced, introspective lyrical approach.

The performance was a tour highlight for YTI⅃AƎЯ, showcasing a peak moment with contributions from local musicians, including Pascal Kerong’A and Nathaniel Ballinger.
