3 New Albums Out This Week You Should Listen to Now: Horsegirl, Cryogyser, and Bartees Strange

There’s so much good music out in the ether that sometimes it’s difficult to parse through all of it. Every week The Daily Music Report will do the hard work for you and highlight the best releases available on streaming services.
This week we’re highlighting new music from Horsegirl, Cryogyser, and Bartees Strange.
Horsegirl – Phonetics On And On
Horsegirl’s sophomore album, Phonetics On and On, out now via Matador, marks a shift from the distortion-heavy sound of their debut to a more spacious, experimental approach. Produced by Cate Le Bon and recorded at The Loft in Chicago during an intense winter cold snap, the album embraces pop minimalism, incorporating violins, synths, and gamelan tiles. Lead single ‘2468’ exemplifies their evolving style with violin and motorik rhythms. Throughout, the trio—Nora Cheng, Penelope Lowenstein, and Gigi Reece—infuses their deep friendship into a record that balances playfulness with emotional honesty.
Standout Songs: ‘Rock City,’ ‘2468,’ ‘Julie,’ ‘Switch Over,’ ‘Frontrunner,’ and ‘I Can’t Stand To See You.’

Cryogeyser – Cryogeyser
Cryogeyser’s self-titled album is a deeply personal and long-gestating project that front person Shawn Marom describes as a “time capsule.” The album took over a year to complete, with an extensive demoing, recording, and mixing process, and was ultimately self-funded after label shopping proved difficult. Marom reflects on the emotional weight of the project, saying, “I really gave everything to this album.” The record is not conceptual but is carefully sequenced by the band, with a focus on making “a bangers album only.” The trio’s sound continues to evolve, with Marom emphasizing their desire to create something expansive and transformative: “This album is about heat. Capturing ice and holding it forever—even as it melts.”
Standout Songs: ‘Sorry,’ ‘Stargirl,’ ‘Blue Light,’ and ‘Cupid.’

Bartees Strange – Horror
Bartees Strange’s Horror, co-produced by Jack Antonoff, is an album about confronting fear and becoming formidable in the process. Drawing from his upbringing as a queer Black man in rural America, Strange weaves themes of resilience and anxiety into an eclectic sonic collage of funk, country, hip-hop, indie rock, and house. Tracks like ‘Too Much’ and ‘Hit It Quit It’ showcase his genre-blending prowess, while ‘Wants Needs’ delivers a soaring, guitar-driven meditation on artistic validation. Overall, Horror ultimately succeeds as a bold, deeply personal exploration of strength and survival.
Standout Songs: ‘Too Much,’ ‘Sober,’ ‘Lie 95,’ ‘Wants Needs,’ and ‘Backseat Banton.’
