There’s so much good music out in the ether that sometimes it’s difficult to parse through all of it. Every week The Daily Music Report will do the hard work for you and highlight the best releases available on streaming services.

This week we’re highlighting new music from Deftones, Laufey, and Wolf Alice.

Deftones – private music

Deftones’ 10th album private music was written over two and a half years across Nashville, Joshua Tree, and Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La studio, reteaming the band with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Diamond Eyes, Koi No Yokan). True to its name, the record balances intimacy and force, from the head-nodding opener ‘my mind is a mountain’ to the thunderous ‘milk of the madonna’ and the reflective ‘i think about you all the time,’ which Moreno wrote after a morning swim. With tracks like ‘infinite source’ dating back to early sessions yet still sounding immediate, the album captures the band’s mix of heaviness, atmosphere, and emotional pull.

Standout Songs: ‘my mind is a mountain,’ ‘infinite source,’ ‘milk of the madonna,’ and ‘departing the body.’

Laufey – A Matter of Time

Laufey’s third studio album, A Matter of Time (released August 22, 2025 via Vingolf Recordings and AWAL), marks a shift from her earlier jazz-focused work toward a more vulnerable and emotionally expressive sound. Co-produced with longtime collaborator Spencer Stewart and Aaron Dessner, the record explores themes of friendship breakups, fear of love, and self-reflection while embracing fuller instrumentation and bolder arrangements that mirror the scale of her live performances. Preceded by four singles—’Silver Lining,’ ‘Tough Luck,’ ‘Lover Girl,’ and ‘Snow White’—the 48-minute album has been described as Laufey’s most ambitious and personal work to date, blending her classical and jazz foundations with expansive pop influences to capture what she calls “the most me I’ve ever been.”

Standout Songs: ‘Clockwork,’ ‘Lover Girl,’ ‘Snow White,’ ‘Silver Lining,’ and ‘Tough Luck.’

Wolf Alice – The Clearing

The Clearing, Wolf Alice’s fourth studio album, was released on 22 August 2025 via RCA Records, their first outside Dirty Hit. Recorded in Los Angeles with Greg Kurstin, it embraces a warmer, ’70s-inspired pop/rock sound influenced by Fleetwood Mac and ELO. Lead single ‘Bloom Baby Bloom,’ followed by ‘The Sofa’ and ‘White Horses,’ reflects the band’s shift toward clarity and confidence. “Maybe there are people who are scared of rock music that is soft,” Ellie Rowsell said. “I don’t care. I’m interested in music that you can play live that is energetic and performative without having to be all distortion pedals and shouting.”

Standout Songs: ‘Bloom Baby Bloom,’ ‘Just Two Girls,’ ‘Safe in the World,’ ‘White Horses,’ and ‘The Sofa.’
